Today I’d like to introduce you to an amazing book titled, “Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes.” Here is my book review of the same. The book is written by American author Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean. It’s one of many “Pete the Cat” books that teach kids about optimistic attitude. This lightly worded picture book particularly focuses on teaching children about colors and positive attitude. The book also comes with a link to download the song.

I heard the story for the first time in my son’s story telling class. I absolutely loved it ! This book is best suited for ages 2 to 7 years old. This is largely a book for reading aloud and enjoying. This book can be used to teach colors to young kids. For little older kids, it’s good for reading skills and teaching about positive attitude. It is filled with wonderful images, superb rhythm, and a wonderful message!

Book Review: Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes

Story

It weaves story and music together.  Pete the Cat is a sweet cat with a positive  attitude. He wears white shoes and sings a catchy song as he walks down the street in his shoes. Then he steps in piles of stuff as he walks down the street, turning his shoes into a variety of colors. For example, first he walks through a big pile of strawberries. The reader is then asked to guess what color his shoes turned. On the next page, you’ll find the answer, “Red!” And his shoes are now painted red. Then comes the question, “Did Pete Cry?” And the answer is a resounding “No!” He simply continues to walk and sing. This is where the song enters the picture! Each song is about his shoes. For example when his shoes turns red, he sings “I love my red shoes… I love my red shoes… ”

Pete walks in something else just when he started getting used to his red shoes! That’s when his shoes take on a different colour. By the end of the book, he has stepped in a bucket of water, which has turned his shoes white but wet. There’s a verse in the book for that, too! “I love my wet shoes… I love my wet  shoes…”

The moral of the story is no matter what situation you are in, keep going and sing your song… because it’s all good.

It will not only make kids smile, but will also give them a  new outlook on life. Pete steps in a variety of items which makes his shoes different colours. Does he cry? No way. He simply composes new songs to go with his shoes. Pete the Cat, without skipping a beat, tells young children that no matter what happens, they must keep going. I can’t think of a better book to teach kids about positive attitude than this one. Do read it to your kids !
