Make Cloud in a Jar Science Experiment

Make Cloud in a Jar Science experiment is a super simple and fun experiment that will teach your child

  • How Are Clouds Made?
  • Clouds are made of water.

You can also watch this video to view step by step procedure.

Supplies Needed

  • Glass Jar with a Lid
  • 1 cup Hot Boiling Water
  • Blue Food Coloring (optional)
  • Aerosol Hairspray
  • 3-5 cubes of Ice

Procedure for Make Cloud in a Jar Science Experiment

  1. Boil 1 cup of water.
  2. You can add blue food color. This is totally optional. It helps you to distinguish the cloud from the water. Plus, it makes the water look like the sky.
  3. Pour 1 cup of hot boiling water into a glass jar.
  4. Quickly spray hairspray into the jar. Never thought I would be using my hairspray to teach science 😉                                                                  Add hairspray to form cloud
  5. Immediately put the lid onto the jar
  6. Place 3-5 pieces of ice on top of the lid of the jar.                Add ice on lid
  7. Watch the top of the jar carefully and you will see a cloud begin to form.
  8. After observing the cloud in the jar, remove the lid, and watch the cloud move out of the jar.form cloud in a jar science experiment

You can explain your child how clouds are formed. The water from earth gets heated and evaporates. When it cools downs, clouds are formed.

In our experiment warm air comes out of the boiling water in the jar. This warm air meets the cold air below the lid. When warm air mixes with cold air, it forms water vapour which forms clouds. The hairspray acts as particles in the air like dust and pollution.
